Illinois Residents Should be on the Lookout for “Drowsy Drivers”

Our readers in Illinois have probably heard quite a bit about the dangers of drunk driving and distracted driving over the years. These dangerous behaviors behind the wheel of motor vehicles lead to thousands of accidents across the country each year, as well as causing severe injuries and even fatalities. However, there is another danger on the roadways that Illinois residents should be aware of. “Drowsy” driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in one year alone – 2017 – drowsy driving led to nearly 800 fatalities in motor vehicle accidents in America. Over a four-year period between 2013 and 2017, over 4,100 traffic fatalities were directly tied to drowsy driving. And, sadly enough, just like drunk driving and distracted driving, drowsy driving is entirely preventable.

Fatal motor vehicle accidents are bad enough, but many more accidents occur in which those involved live but come out of the incident with severe injuries that may be life-altering. NHTSA statistics show that in 2017 a whopping 91,000 motor vehicle accidents in America involved drowsy driving. It seems simple enough – don’t get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you are too tired to stay focused on driving. But, unfortunately, it seems that each year thousands of people make the wrong decision.

When Illinois residents are involved in motor vehicle accidents in which they are injured by the acts or omissions of another party, no matter the cause, they may have the legal right to seek financial compensation by filing a personal injury lawsuit. Drowsy driving is negligent driving. It is important to hold those who put others in danger responsible for their negligent acts.
